EDUARDO CALIXTO GONZALES
HOUSTON - Eduardo Calixto Gonzales, age 50, a committed family man, writer, educator, University of Texas Longhorn football fan and Catholic died on December 8, 2020, in Houston after a short illness.
Cali graduated from Edcouch-Elsa High School in 1989 after which he attended the University of Texas at Austin where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. He then attended Eastern Michigan University where he recevied a Master of Arts degree in Creative Writing and met the love of his life, his wife, Sandra Blackburn Gonzales.
Mr. Gonzales taught in the South Texas and Donna School Districts before landing in the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District where he taught English at Edinburg High School and Economedes High School. At the time of his death he was drama director at B.L. Garza Middle School, a job that was his pride and joy.
He was a salt water editor for Texas Fish and Game Magazine where he wrote extensively on his favorite pass time.
He was a lifetime parishioner at St. Joseph Catholic Church of Edinburg where he received his First Holy Communion and was an altar server as a little boy. Mr. Gonzales was a Lector and Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at the 5p.m., 7 p.m., and 6 p.m. Masses.
Mr. Gonzales was preceded in death by his grandparents Samuel and Herminia Rios of Corpus Christi and Jose and Elvira Gonzales of Jourdanton. He is survived by his wife Sandra Lynn Blackburn Gonzales of Edinburg; one son, Eduardo Calixto Gonzales Jr. of Dallas; parents, Frank M. and Judith R. Gonzales of Edinburg; two brothers, Francisco E. Gonzales Jr. of Edinburg and Ernesto Javier (Patricia) Gonzales of Pflugerville; one nephew, Ernesto Javier Gonzales Jr. of McAllen; in-laws, and many admiring friends and students.
Memorial Service will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m. on Sunday, December 13, 2020, at Legacy Chapels 4610 South Jackson Road in Edinburg. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, December 14, 2020, at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edinburg wit Fr. Gregory T. Labus Presiding. Followed by the inurnment at Hilcrest Cemetery in Edinburg.
