EDINBURG
EDINBURG - Gerardo Cantu, also known as “Coach Cantu”, 64, entered eternal rest on Monday, August 31, 2020, at Amara Hospice facility in Edinburg.
He was born in Hargill, Texas on January 20, 1956 to Cirilo and Virginia (Barron) Cantu
He graduated from Edinburg High School in 1975, continued his studies at West Texas College, and graduated from Pan American University with Bachelors in Education.
Gerardo was employee at ECISD his entire teaching and coaching career. He taught at North Middle School, Sixth Grade Campus, and retired from Harwell Middle School in January of 2015. He was a Physical Education Teacher and coached Basketball, Track, & Football. He was also an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys and his beloved San Antonio Spurs.
Coach Cantu was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and brother. He also took pride in coaching hundreds of students for 31 years of service. Gerardo is preceded in death his parents, Virginia and Cirilo Cantu and his brother, David Cantu.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Leticia Garcia Cantu; children, Jason Jerry (Amber) and Justin Jerry of Edinburg, Meagan (Matthew) Martinez of San Antonio, Texas. He also survived by three brothers, Casimiro (Jania) and Cirilo (Araceli) from Edinburg, and Joe (Lee) from Hargill; and one sister Maria (Lorenzo) Hernandez of Weslaco, Texas; and his pride and joy, his grandson, Eric Jason. Also surviving are his in laws, Ricardo and Socorro Garcia of Edinburg. His brother in law, Greg (Marisol) Garcia, sisters in law, Sylvia (Eddie) Garcia, Cynthia G. Lucio, and Melissa (Xavier) Moreno; numerous nieces and nephews as well as his beloved fur baby, Loki.

A public viewing will be held on Wednesday, September 2nd from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Legacy Chapel in Edinburg. The family request that you adhere to social distancing and wear a mask. A funeral mass will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Edinburg.
