Oralia S. Rivas was called to be with the Lord on September 25, 2014 at the age of 86. She was born on April 8, 1928 in Los Ebanos, Texas. She was preceded in eternal rest by her parents, Pedro and Herminia Salinas, her brother, Amando Salinas, her husband, Ines G. Rivas, and her son, Inez G. Rivas, Jr. Oralia is survived by her siblings Dahlia Ochoa, Fausto Salinas, Cristela Reyna, Azucena Gonzalez, and Romeo Salinas; her children Roel Rivas (Lupita), Aaron J. Rivas, George Rivas (Debra), and Pamela Rivas (Ricardo); 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Oralia was a dedicated educator, community leader and advocate for social justice in her professional career which spanned over 40 years. She earned a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Education, taught countless students in the classroom, and also helped develop curriculum and training during her time at Region One. Oralia was passionate about her faith, the betterment of her community, her friends, and above all, her family. We will always remember how she loved to sing songs of praise, play the piano, dance with her husband and beau of over 50 years, and enjoy her coffee and pan dulce. Oralia was our haven of safety and serenity in the darkest of times, a songbird, and our perpetual teacher.
Visitation will be from 5pm to 9pm with a 7pm rosary Sunday September 28, 2014 at Legacy Funeral Home, 4610 South Jackson Rd, Edinburg. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 2:00pm, Monday September 29, 2014 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Los Ebanos, Texas. Interment will follow at Los Ebanos Cemetery.
