It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Horacio Somohano, Jr., beloved husband, father and grandfather, who entered eternal rest with his Almighty Father on August 7th, 2014 at Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen. He was born to Horacio and Lydia Somohano in San Antonio, Texas on July 26th, 1927. He graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1945, then enlisted in the Army. Horacio served his country honorably, and was awarded a World War II Victory Ribbon. Afterwards, he attended The University of Texas at Austin, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1951, beginning a tradition of at least two more generations of Longhorn graduates. Horacio worked for the Internal Revenue Service for 33 years. After retiring, he worked for Bentsen Development Company for 30 years and owned a tax service company in McAllen. Horacio was a lifetime member of the Texas Exes, The American Legion and The Knights of Columbus; he was a longtime member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Horacio is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Maria Benita Somohano; his children, Rosario "Rosie" Guerra (John), Martha Rios (Bobby), Norma Mendiola (Joe), Horacio "Trae" Somohano, III. (Rebecca); twelve grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He is remembered as a man respected by his colleagues and as a wise and inspirational guide to his family. Family and friends are invited to a visitation between the hours of six and nine in the evening on Sunday, August 10th, 2014 at Legacy Funeral Home (4610 S. Jackson Rd. in Edinburg), where a rosary will be held at seven in the evening. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at ten o'clock in the morning on Monday, August 11th, 2014 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in McAllen. Interment will follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr with a full military honors. The family is in the care of Legacy Funeral Home in Edinburg.
