EDINBURG - Richard Arlen Martin “Dick” passed away peacefully on November 2, 2023 at the age of 84. He leaves behind his loving wife of 62 years, Vivian Martin; their children, Marty (Debbie) Martin, Holly Giglio, Kimberley (Jeff) Johnson; five grandchildren, Christopher Martin, Cameron (Rebecca Olivarez) Martin,  Mia and Jake Giglio, and Connor Johnson; his brothers in law,  Jim and Norman Cole; his nieces, Cindy (Joe) Flores, Karen (Todd) Lesikar, and Jennifer (Tom) Vail.

Dick was a lifelong resident of the Rio Grande Valley.  He served his country proudly in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Meredith,  DD-890.  A natural salesman, Dick spent most of his professional life selling Mac, Freightliner, and Peterbilt trucks.

Dick and Vivian were married in March of 1961.  Together they enjoyed hunting, surf fishing, dancing, and entertaining family and friends in the backyard around their BBQ pit and pool.  He was extremely proud of “his redhead” Vivian.  He never failed to tell her he loved her, encouraged her artistic abilities, and bragged of her accomplishments.

Those that knew Dick, know he was an opinionated man and he loved a good argument.   He was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren for being strong enough to stand up for their own beliefs, even if they differed from his.  His family came before everything else.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, William Bartley and Fredah (Guffey) Martin, his sister and brother in law, Barbara and Al Chapman, and his cousin, Vickie (Martin) Wellar who was like a twin sister.  They were affectionately known as “Dicky and Vickie.”

The Martin family would like to thank the staff at the Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home for the amazing care they provided in Dick’s last days.  Although our loss is immeasurable, so is the love left behind.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at Legacy Chapels 4610 South Jackson Road in Edinburg. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission with full military honors.
