San Juan - Maria Luisa (Cano) Montecillo, 79, went to be with the Lord on Monday, October 22, 2024, at the San Juan Nursing Home in San Juan, Texas. Ms. Montecillo is preceded in death by her parents, Modesto and Dorotea Cano Montecillo; her aunt and uncle who raised her, Natividad and Beatriz Cano Alaniz; cousin and a brother to her, Gumecindo Cano Alaniz.
Ms. Montecillo grew up in San Juan, Texas and never left her roots. She spent her time being a care giver to her loved ones. She took care of her uncle and aunt, Natividad F. and Beatriz Cano Alaniz, her uncle, Lazaro Montecillo, and lastly, Gumecindo Cano Alaniz. She made sure that they were well taken care of.
Ms. Montecillo is survived by her sister, Maria Bertha (Jose) Montecillo Mejia; her niece, Claudia (Gus) Mejia Gonzalez; her nephew, Jose E. (Cristal) Mejia, II; 4 grand nieces, Arianna Gonzalez, Alessandra Gonzalez, Chloey Mejia, Camryn Mejia; 1 grand nephew, Colt Joshua Mejia; extended Alaniz family, Glafiro, Gilberto, Gustavo, and Gumecindo Alaniz; Cano family, Israel Cano, Juan Cano, Antonio Cano, Beatriz Cano Alaniz, Virginia Cano Garcia, Gabriel Cano, Lilia Cano Elizondo, Jesus Cano; families and cousins from the Cano branch from the Rio Grande Valley and other parts of the United States; numerous family and friends.
In addition, to family, Ms. Montecillo cultivated many friends in the PSJA area. She grew up on 4th street in San Juan, where Santiago Alanis, Jose Quintanilla, Max Barbosa and Manuel Sloss Sr. families were also considered not just neighbors, but also friends and family. Maria Luisa was a hard working person who spent her time as a hair stylist, beautician and friend to many of her customers as well as countless Winter Texans in the PSJA area. She worked in many salons throughout her career. Many clients remember her from her work at Julie’s Beauty Shop, Ramos Beauty Shop and Molly’s Hair Salon to name a few. She was educated in the PSJA schools in San Juan, Texas.
A very special thanks to the San Juan Nursing Home and their staff, especially to Eloisa Fernandez, San Juan Nursing Home Administrator, for their care and dedication to her for the past 7 years. The staff is to be commended for their diligent care. Ms. Montecillo served as the president of the Resident’s council there at the San Juan Nursing Home. She was quite outspoken when she saw the need.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with 11 a.m. prayer service, Monday, October 28, 2024, at Legacy Chapels 4610 South Jackson Road in Edinburg.
Funeral services are under the direction of Legacy Chapels in Edinburg.
