Edelmiro Romeo Alvarez

EDINBURG - Edelmiro R. Alvarez aka "Ed", 71, of Rio Grande City, passed away on September 19, 2024, after valiantly fighting a short battle with cancer. Mr. Alvarez is preceded in death by his parents, Teodoro Sr & Santana G. Alvarez; 2 siblings, Israel Alvarez and Silverio Alvarez.

Ed was born in Roma, TX and was the youngest of 9 children. He grew up in Rio Grande City, TX and also in parts of Central California where he spent time as a young man working in the fields and where he gained his strong work ethic. He also took up Karate and diligently practiced and became a brown belt.

It was Ed's love of cars that eventually prompted him to work in the Automotive Industry and he became a successful Automotive Salesman for over 35 years. He started as a Sales Clerk and worked his way up the ladder to become a Store Manager and then a District Sales Manager.

Mr. Alvarez was the ultimate car enthusiast his whole life and would often find him at car shows, car swap meets and auctions or watching on tv or online. He loved classic cars and hot rods best and his knowledge of them was not only vast but was also quite impressive. He was without a doubt our go to "expert" on all things automotive related in the family.

When he wasn't obsessing over cars the next best thing was his love of sports. He was an avid football fan and relentlessly cheered on the Dallas Cowboys - win, lose, or tie. Of course he knew the best plays and often wondered why they never took his advice! He also enjoyed golfing, thrift shop hunting, going antiquing, watching western reruns to the point he could recite lines, taking trips and long drives up and down the CA coast with us in tow where he often told the same old stories over and over and we'd roll our eyes and chime in, "We know, Dad!" He also enjoyed good food and conversations, and he especially had the biggest sweet tooth - cakes, ice cream, candy, pan dulce and pies, oh my! Although he wouldn't turn down a good steak either. He loved to haggle over prices and would often boast that he could get the best deal on anything and everything and he usually did to our chagrin. He was full of dad jokes and the best one liners, "If it ain't red it ain't a (Cor)vette!"

Mr. Alvarez is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Margaret M. Alvarez, who stayed by his side until the very end; 2 children, Nancy J. Weed and Rebecca Alvarez-Hazard; 5 grandchildren, Michael & (Alex) Weed III, Rachael & (Michael) Hogan, Charisma Weed, Edward Weed and Everleigh Alvarez; 5 great-grandchildren, Reagan Weed, Addyson Weed, Lennon Vanderwaal, Scarlett Weed, and Bronte Weed; 6 siblings, Primitivo Alvarez, Teodoro Alvarez Jr, Adrian Alvarez, Emilio Alvarez, Anita Guerra, Aurora Rodriguez; many other wonderful family and friends.

What mattered most was that he loved his family fiercely and was always just a phone call away no matter the time. His presence will be sorely missed by those who loved and knew him best and our little family will never be the same without this 5'6," larger than life, force of nature.

'If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever.' RIP our loving Husband, Dad, and Grandpa.
