EDINBURG - David T. "Skipper" Smith, 74, went to be with our Lord and Savior on February 14, 2023 at his home in Edinburg, Texas. Skipper was born on October 22, 1948 in Edinburg, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Virginia Smith and by his older brother, Richard Clark Smith.
Skipper was a proud, lifelong Edinburg resident graduating from Edinburg High School and Pan American University. He worked his entire career at his family business, Valley Insurance Services (formerly Aldrich, Smith & Baker) where he became a big supporter of our community primarily through his service in the Edinburg Rotary Club. Skipper embodied the Rotary motto "Service Over Self" serving joyfully in several capacities and earning perfect attendance for 47 years.
Skipper took great joy in being a grandfather and to his grandchildren he was "Grumps." Grumps truly enjoyed watching them grow and never missed a school function, sporting event or an opportunity to spend time with them. He leaves behind a legacy of honesty, generosity, trustworthiness and dependability. A true man of his word and his faith.
Skipper is survived by his wife, Catherine Smith; sons, Casey (Leena) Smith and James (Shannon) Smith; five grandchildren, Parker, Hayden, Kyle, McKenzie and Clark.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 4th, 2023, at Legacy Chapels 4610 South Jackson Road in Edinburg. Following the memorial service a gathering will be he held at 2018 Ann St. in Edinburg. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Edinburg Rotary.
Funeral services are under the direction of Legacy Chapels in Edinburg.
