BETTY JEAN STEWART
EDINBURG- Betty Jean (Salisbury) Stewart, 94, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 15, 2023 in Edinburg surrounded by her family. Mrs. Stewart was preceded in death by her husband, James Stewart; her son, Richard Stewart; her parents Donald and Hettie Mae Salisbury; in-laws Frank and Anna Bell Stewart.
Mrs. Stewart was born in Edinburg on February 23, 1929, to Donald and Hettie Mae Salisbury also of Edinburg. She was a only child.
Mrs. Stewart attended Edinburg Schools where after graduation began working for Yoder Motor Company. After some time she met our dad James Stewart. He was the love of her life. On December 22, 1950, she married James Clifton Stewart of Edcouch-Elsa. After their children were born, son Frank and daughter Martha. Mrs. Stewart became a full time housewife and mother. She was a wonderful mother and role model to her children and also to others. Mrs. Stewart and her husband became members of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Edinburg where she remained a member until her recent death. She was a strong Christian woman who loved her church and Jesus Christ.She instilled that love into her children and grandchildren.Upon the death of her husband James Stewart in 1970. Mrs. Stewart began work as a bookkeeper for the First National Bank in Edinburg and later went to work for Amigo Implement in Edinburg, until her retirement.Mrs. Stewart loved to cook for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. And once again the love of her savior was passed down to further generations. She loved her grandchildren James and Tyler Stewart and her great grandchildren Asa and Shepherd Stewart.
Mrs. Stewart is survived by her two children, Martha(Stewart) Scurlock(Tom) and Frank Stewart; two grandchildren James Stewart(Brittany) and Tyler Stewart(Elizabeth); twin great-grandchildren, Asa and Shepherd Stewart; numerous family and friends.
Special thanks to Irasema Vallejo for helping care for our mother. And to Reverend Dr. Samuel Simon for always being there for our family.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 19, 2023 at Legacy Chapels 4610 South Jackson Road in Edinburg. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 20, 2023 at First Christian Church 410 W University Dr. in Edinburg. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Edinburg. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to First Christian Church memorial fund 410 W. University Drive Edinburg. Pallbearers will be James Stewart, Tyler Stewart, Frank Stewart, Sidney Dromgoole, Andrew Prukop and R. H. Pursley.
Funeral services are under the direction of Legacy Chapels in Edinburg.
