Andrus Kuik

MCALLEN - Andrus (Andy) Kuik, 78, passed away on March 1, 2025. Mr. Kuik is preceded in death by his parents, Endel and Hetty; his brother, Toomas.

Mr. Kuik is survived by his wife, Mary Kuik of over 52 years; four children, Tim (Roberta), Tonya (Shorty), Taara, and Erik (Julie); 9 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He suffered from Alzheimer’s disease in his latter years and has now been released from the prison of his body.

Andy was a man’s man whom always made you feel safer in his presence. Back in the 70's he and Mary decided to look for a cabin to augment their city life. In their quest to find a cabin, they ended up buying a resort in Bemidji and their life was forever changed. They owned and operated the resort for over 40 years, creating memories for their family and many others. Canoe trips down the Mississippi, hunting over 200 acres of private land, fishing Big Wolf lake, and all the classic resort-oriented fun. Andy’s appreciation and love of the outdoors was deep and a lasting gift he gave to others.

As a resort owner he and his boys installed new septic tanks, waterlines, plumbing, electrical, roofing, you name it, he either knew how to do it or would figure it out. This made him the perfect employee for Ace hardware so it should come as no surprise that he found his way there in his later working years helping many Bemidji residents with their “I need Andy from Ace” home ownership problems.

Mr. Kuik is a Bemidji hero, once rescuing a family from a burning car. That was Andy. Always stepping in when the need arose. He continued to do that in their retirement years in Mission, Texas. What he’d want for everyone is to celebrate and remember him with the shared memories. He will be cremated and there will be a private dedication ceremony in Minnesota this summer. In lieu of flowers we would ask that you join us in a memorial gift to the Alzheimer’s society (alz.org).

Funeral services are under the direction of Legacy Chapels.
