ENRIQUE "HENRY" HERNANDEZ, SR.
SAN JUAN - Enrique "Henry" Hernandez, Sr. of San Juan, Texas, entered heaven's gates, surrounded by his family, on June 22, 2017. He was born July 18, 1938, in Mexico City, D.F, Mexico, as one of 12, to the late Rufugio Hernandez and the late Ana Maria Mendoza Hernandez. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 53 years, Cayetana "Tany" Flores Hernandez and five children; Henry Hernandez, Jr. and his wife Melissa of San Antonio; Diana Vela and her husband Juan Jose of Laredo; Cynthia Rubiano and her husband Ricardo of San Antonio; Melissa Ramos and her husband Carlo of Leander; and Omar Javier Hernandez and his wife Kelly of San Antonio. He will also be missed by his 11 grandchildren; Amanda, Briana, Vanessa, Morgan, Allen Dean, Benjamin, Olivia, Fiona, Marco, Christian, and Camryn. Mr. Hernandez is also survived by ten siblings; Juan Hernandez, Paula Martinez, Carlota Mancias, Maria Salinas, Micaela Ramos, Manual Hernandez, Lupe Hernandez, Francisco Hernandez, Jose Hernandez, Annie Navarro and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his sister, Elisa Gomez, and his brother, Martin Hernandez.
Mr. Hernandez came to the United States in 1942, and later, he proudly became an American citizen. He earned his license to sell insurance for American National Insurance Company in 1968. He was a top salesman, and eventually an award-winning district manager in both the McAllen and Brownsville districts, before retiring in 2004. He was hard-working, and always encouraged others to believe in themselves. As a result of his achievements, Henry and Tany traveled the world, visiting five of the seven continents.
Henry will be remembered as a man whose first priorities were God and family. He was generous in his love and faith. His legacy lives on through his loving and close-knit family, who also have Jesus in the center of their lives. As a family, Henry and Tany were founding members of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in San Juan. They were also prominent members of St. Mary's Catholic Church, during their time in Brownsville.
Henry was an enthusiastic sports fan and enjoyed attending PSJA Bears football games. He was also an avid golfer, and most loved playing golf with his two sons. He also treasured time with his entire family at the beach in South Padre Island, and adored swimming in the ocean.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a 6 p.m. rosary, Sunday, June 25, 2017, at Legacy Chapels, 4610 S. Jackson Rd, Edinburg, Texas. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 26, 2017 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in San Juan. Interment will follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr. A celebration of life reception will be held at Legacy Chapels following interment. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made in Mr. Hernandez's honor to Saint Vincent de Paul, at St. John the Baptist Parish.
Funeral services are under the direction of Legacy Chapels in Edinburg.
